William Kasper leads Campus Operations in sustainability initiatives through the Sustainability Work Group. Bill is also the Purchasing and Contracts Manager for Campus Operations. In his work at the University of Oregon, he has been a leader in operational sustainability and environmentally preferable purchasing.  Bill has been working with his staff, Campus Operations and industry to implement sustainable practices to reduce the impact on the environment and conserve valuable resources.  He also is responsible for energy purchasing, is active on campus purchasing rules committees, and has been an active supporter of Campus Recycling and Composting.
 
Christine Taylor Thompson

Christine Thompson from Campus Planning and Real Estate, is responsible for maintaining and developing campus planning policies that apply to all campus buildings and landscapes.  She staffs the Campus Planning Committee and has had a long-standing interest in sustainable design concepts as they relate to her background in planning, historic preservation, and architectural design.  She staffed the effort to develop the UO’s first Sustainable Development Plan over ten years ago at a time when no other university had developed such a plan.  The Plan incorporated emerging sustainable design ideas, such as the LEED rating system.  Now Christine is prepared to coordinate the Plan’s update process to facilitate implementation of the UO’s Climate Action Plan.

In his 25th year with Facilities Services, Ernie has been involved in sustainability primarily through energy and water conservation efforts.  Hundreds of projects such as lighting retrofits, occupancy controls, HVAC system upgrades and installation of water conserving devices have been completed by his teams over the years.

Jim Fleck has been associated with the University of Oregon as both a student and employee since 1989. He has worked for Facilities Services in various full- and part-time capacities since 1990; and has been the Recycling Operations Supervisor since 1999. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Literature from the U of O; and he is currently an MPA candidate in the PPPM Department.  In his work at Campus Operations, he has been focused on operational sustainability.
 
Jeff Madsen

Jeff Madsen is the Utilities and Energy Project Manager at the University of Oregon. Jeff comes from Idaho State University, where he was the Director of Space and Energy Management. He has worked in the facility services area for over 17 years, and was the first in Idaho Higher Education to manage performance based energy upgrades. At the University of Oregon he works out of the Capital Construction group, dividing his time between ensuring new construction projects are energy efficient, working with Oregon's Department of Energy, managing the University's SEED (State Energy Efficient Design) program requirements, ensuring projects meet the State's LEED requirements, looking for energy savings and sustainable projects across campus, and overseeing campus utilities.
 
Karyn Kaplan

Karyn Kaplan was one of the founders of the Campus Recycling Program at the University of Oregon. The Program has served as a model for colleges nationwide and also has provided countless student jobs.  Now housed in Facilities Services, Karyn has evolved to work on Campus Operations Sustainability to encompass waste reduction, resource efficiency and environmental stewardship.  Karyn works with students to produce the quarterly Campus Operations Sustainability Newsletter and is involved in several other operational sustainability projects with Facilities.  Karyn also works closely with students on educating the campus community on sustainability practices and initiatives.
 
Susan Thames

Susan Thames is a journeyman electrician with Campus Operations.  In her work she is always looking at ways to preserve resources while providing healthy working systems on=campus.  Susan has been taking the initiative to stay on top of current and future technologies that will reduce energy use and environmental impact.  Susan’s recent focus has been on new LED technology and the potential for use at the University of Oregon.  Susan has lived in Oregon since she was 7 years old and as an Oregonian, values sustainability in all aspects of her life.
 
Teri Jones

Teri is the Assistant Energy Specialist in Campus Operations. Teri is a graduate of Lane Community College’s Energy Management program.  She has worked with EWEB’s energy management department and with the City of Eugene’s energy analyst in their facilities department.  At the UO Teri tracks the energy usage of main campus buildings and UO off-campus inventory too.  Teri provides energy reports to various people and agencies from students and staff to the Department of Energy.  She works to identify potential resource conservation projects and support other energy project management staff in implementing energy savings goals. Teri enjoys being engaged in making the human footprint small upon this earth and its resources. 
 
Vince Babkirk
Exterior Maintenance Coordinator

Vince Babkirk is the Landscape Maintenance Coordinator for the Exterior Team of Facilities Services.  Vince has focused on beautifying the campus in a sustainable manner to reduce water use, provide safe pest management, compost and conserve valuable resources.  Vince is also certified as a Maxicom Central Computer Irrigation System Administrator.  Prior to his work at the UO he served as a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor as well as an Irrigation Specialist, City of St. George (Utah) Parks Department.
